Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions (RMUoHP) offers a variety of professional development courses.  Current courses are listed below.

ECS Preparatory Course for Physical Therapists
Are you taking the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialization examination in 2008? RMUoHP is pleased to announce the next Electrophysiologic Clinical Specialization Examination Prep Course. The next 3-day course will be held January 16-18, 2009.  The course instructors include Mark Brooks, PT, DSc, ECS, Richard McKibben, PT, MS, ECS, and Michael Skurja, Jr., PT, DPT, ECS.

The format will be case review and student problem solving with emphasis on pathology and electrophysiologic testing. The small class size will enable each student to obtain answers to all questions. In addition to the case reviews, there will be special sections on biostatistics and research design and somatosensory evoked potential testing, as well as a multiple-choice examination with review questions and discussion on how to answer multiple-choice questions. Registration information available in late 2008.

Basic Electroneuomyography Training Program
Michael Skurja, Jr., PT, DPT, ECS
Program Director

The training program in basic electroneuromyography (ENMG) offers study at the beginning and intermediate levels of electrophysiologic testing and knowledge of neurophysiology, pathology and pathophysiology.  The program is designed to meet the scholarly and clinical needs of the beginning and intermediate electroneuro-myographer and is designed to introduce the student to the assessment and implementation of sound scientific principles in the electrophysiologic evaluation of patients with neuromuscular disabilities. The curriculum includes neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, electromyography, motor and sensory nerve studies, late responses, pathophysiology, muscle and nerve pathology, clinical examination skills, marketing strategies, and case study presentations.

To complete the program, students will attend two intensive weeks of courses (7 days each) and may also complete an optional one day of written and practical examinations.

The ENMG Program is committed to the development of the specialist who can:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in nerve studies of the upper and lower extremities and correctly interpret the results
  • Demonstrate proficiency in electromyography (EMG) of muscles of the cervical and lumbosacral paraspinals, upper and lower extremities, and correctly interpret the results
  • Demonstrate proficiency in F-wave and H reflex testing and correctly interpret the results
  • Integrate current best practices into the assessment for each patient
  • Modify practice strategies to optimize results.

The program format consists of three days on-site at our Provo, Utah campus. Class runs from 8AM-5:30PM daily, including a one-and-a-half hour lunch break. Instructors include Michael Skurja, Jr., PT, DPT ECS and Richard P. Nielsen, PT, DHSc, ECS - both instructors are certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and Electrophysiologic Clinical Specialists.

The 2008 Intermediate Electroneuromyography Training Program will be November 6-8, 2008.  Registration information will be available in Spring 2008.

EMG Symposium
The 19th Annual Electroneuromyographic Symposium is scheduled for March 7 and 8, 2008 at the Marriott Provo Hotel and Conference Center in Provo , Utah .  The program on Friday will run from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm with several distinguished speakers, followed by a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. We are excited to announce that Roger J. Allen , PT, Ph.D., will be the keynote speaker on Saturday morning, March 8.

Roger J. Allen , PT, Ph.D. is Professor of Physical Therapy at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA.  He will be speaking on “New Discoveries into Autonomic and Neuroendocrine Mechanisms Underlying Atypical Symptom Patterns of Neuropathic Pain”. He has numerous journal publications relating to neurovascular innervation patterns of peripheral nerves, pain patterns in patients with complex regional pain syndrome, thermography, chronic pain, somatosensory desensitization, vertigo, and sympathetic nervous system changes.

After the Saturday morning session, all participants are encouraged to attend the afternoon meeting of the American Congress of Electroneuromyography.

Tuition for the symposium is $450. Click here to download the registration form!
